To enhance the interaction and cooperation among all the academic staff on the UM campus, we are happy to announce the establishment of Bo-Ya Salon which provides a unique program and setting for senior leaders of both the academic units and the RC staff to meet on regular basis together with student representatives of each RC. The first ever Bo-Ya (Liberal Arts) Salon took place in New Campus, Shiu Pong College building on 3 June, 2014.

The topic of “prerequisites for success” might be debatable if not outright objectionable.  However, it is indisputable that we all strive for successes. Small successes can be easily achieved or even planned; the major ones (e.g., Nobel Prizes, Microsoft) are notoriously elusive. In this talk, we will identify various prerequisites for success. Unfortunately some of the prerequisites are destined thus beyond our control. But there are prerequisites that rely entirely on our own effort. It is essential to know and master these prerequisites to greatly enhance our chances of success.

The speaker, Professor Chia-Ling Chien graduated with a BS Degree in Physics, from Tunghai University (Taiwan), the liberal arts college in Taiwan in the early 60’s and 70’s. A failed musician turned physicist, he received Ph.D. in physics from Carnegie-Mellon University.  He then went to Johns Hopkins University where he stays ever since. He is now the Jacob L. Hain Professor of Arts and Sciences in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and has been the Director of the Materials Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) since 1997. He is a condensed matter physics experimentalist interested in nanostructured materials, spintronics, superconductivity and pure spin current phenomena.  He is a Fellow of the American Physics Society (APS) and American Advancement of Sciences (AAAS), and a recipient of the David Adler Award of the APS and the first recipient of the Asian Union of Magnetics Societies (AUMS) Award.
